School Scholarships and Grants
School Scholarships:
We have probably all seen and related to the commercial in which the daughter and mother squeal with delight as the daughter exclaims, “I’ve just been accepted by one of the best schools in the country”; although, what the father hears is, “I’ve just been accepted by one of the most expensive schools in the country!” His realistic perception of his daughter’s statement underlines a basic fact: education–especially quality education–is expensive. In these days of economic crisis, families and individuals find it more necessary than ever to avail themselves of accessible scholarships.
Who is eligible for School Scholarships?
To apply for a scholarship in the U.S., you must first be able to prove that you are a U.S. citizen–either by birth or naturalization. Apart from citizenship, the most standard eligibility requirement remains academic excellence demonstrated by a GPA of 3.0 or higher, though some scholarships accept applicants with GPAs as low as 2.5. Students who receive academic scholarships are typically required to maintain a certain GPA, as well, to continue receiving scholarship benefits. While GPA continues to be a common means of assessing academic excellence, some institutions award scholarships based on standardized test scores. Typically, applicants must attain a minimum SAT score of 1100 or a minimum ACT score of 24. To ensure that students who obtain scholarships maintain the academic level which earned them the scholarship in the first place, most institutions require that applicants remain full-time students. In most cases, applicants must also demonstrate that they have a clean record or that they have maintained a clean record for a prescribed period.
How to apply for School Scholarships?
When applying for a scholarship, treat the application process as you would treat preparing for a major class project: follow directions scrupulously, meet or beat deadlines, be thorough in providing all necessary requirements and providing all requested documents, complete all parts legibly, and submit your highest-quality work. Most applications require that students include relevant financial information for themselves and their parents, academic records, essays, letters of recommendation and/or interviews.
What are the types of School Scholarships?
Although the most common scholarships reward academic merit, other types of scholarships may be awarded to students associated with various geographic locations, institutions, denominations, or ethnic backgrounds. Some scholarships are also reserved for students with significant financial needs. Employers may sometimes offer scholarships to their employees’ academically-qualified children to provide additional cash incentives without raising salaries. Additionally, some schools provide scholarships particularly for students whose parents are employed by that particular school. As to ethnic and denominational scholarships, these scholarships typically benefit minority students and those with special academic gifts and limited financial means.
The bottom line in applying for school scholarships is to treat it like a job or college application. After determining if you meet eligibility requirements, start collecting documents that prove your eligibility. While institutions offer a limited number of scholarships, if you are both gifted and dedicated, you will soon find a scholarship that works for you.
School Grants:
School grants are typically grants that are awarded to schools and then the schools direct this money to students that meet the qualifications. In the majority of the cases this is funding that is available from the federal government and the school acts like the bank, in that it receives the money from the government and then pays it out to the student. These are some of the best grants available as they are low to no interest depending on the amount received.

How to Apply for School Grants?
The first step in the application process is to fill out a FAFSA or Federal Application for Student Aid. This form is available from the government website. This application form is how schools and the government determine your financial status and is use to determine your eligibility. However there is a deadline for completing the FAFSA to receive funding for the following school year. If this deadline is missed then the student will not received any school grants the following year. Normally grants funded by the state will require an additional application form sent to the state government, though this will vary between the states
What are the Types of School Grants?
State grants are school grants that are funded by the state government. These grants may be available from state schools or from the grant program website. Most state schools will have information on all the types of grants available as well as eligibility and application specifications. Many times these grants will focus on a specific course of study such as the arts or engineering, instead of being based solely on financial need.
There are several federal school grants available and the Pell grant is the most widely used. This grant provides money to students through the U.S. Department of education. Financial need is required and the typical amount rewarded generally covers about 30% of tuition. The eligibility of this grant is determined by looking at how much the expected family contribution and comparing this to the total costs. However there is a maximum amount that can be awarded, no matter the cost of tuition. There are no limitations for how often a student can apply for the Pell grant, as it can be used as reimbursement for already paid tuition. Additionally the amount awarded can be changed as the student’s financial situation changes.
A different type of grant that is partnered with specific schools in the FSEOG or Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants. In this grant the government provides 75% of the monetary award and the school provides the other 25%. Again the eligibility requirements depend on financial need and uses the FAFSA as the application. There are some other eligibility specification s as U.S. students cannot already have a bachelor’s degree, the student cannot be default on any educational loans and the amount allowed depends on funding received from a Pell grant.
